The Golden Globe Nominations were announced today. I compiled some thoughts for your reading pleasure. There are still several of these movies that I haven’t seen yet (I noted them with an *) but I plan to get to most of them in time for the Oscars.

My biggest takeaways:

  • Mank, The Trial of the Chicago 7, and Nomadland got the nominations I expected
  • Lots of well deserved love for Promising Young Woman
  • No love for Da 5 Bloods
  • I’m usually pretty in-tune to all the possible nominees, even if I haven’t been able to see all of them. I had absolutely no idea what Music was when it was announced as the recipient of two nominations.

Best Picture (Drama)

The Father*

Mank

Nomadland*

Promising Young Woman

Trial of the Chicago 7

Notable Snubs: Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Da 5 Bloods, One Night in Miami, News of the World, Judas and the Black Messiah*

Reaction Notes:

  • Very happy to see Promising Young Woman here.
  • The only locks I had were Nomadland and Trial of the Chicago 7.
  • There were about 5–7 others that could have claimed the other three spots.
  • I’ll mention it here but it applies to a few different categories down the list… where in the hell is Da 5 Bloods?!

Best Picture (Musical/Comedy)

Borat Subsequent Moviefilm

Hamilton

Music*

Palm Springs

The Prom

Notable Snubs: On the Rocks, The King of Staten Island, French Exit*

Reaction Notes:

  • Usually we get at least one major Oscar Best Picture contender in this category but not this year.
  • I haven’t even heard of Music. Apparently it has yet to be released so I guess I need to add that to the watch list.
  • Happy to see Palm Springs here.
  • Personally, I don’t think Hamilton should qualify but I don’t make the rules.

Best Actress (Drama)

Viola Davis (Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom)

Andra Day (The United States vs. Billie Holliday*)

Vanessa Kirby (Pieces of a Woman)

Frances McDormand (Nomadland)

Carey Mulligan (Promising Young Woman)

Notable Snubs: Sofia Loren (The Life Ahead*), Zendaya (Malcom and Marie*), Amy Adams (Hilbilly Elegy)

Reaction Notes:

  • Davis, Kirby, McDormand, and Mulligan were all locks — just wasn’t sure who would be fifth
  • I haven’t seen The United States vs. Billie Holiday so I can’t comment
  • Excited to see Nomadland here soon

Best Actor (Drama)

Riz Ahmed (The Sound of Metal)

Chadwick Boseman (Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom)

Anthony Hopkins (The Father*)

Gary Oldman (Mank)

Tahar Rahim (The Mauritanian*)

Notable Snubs: Delroy Lindo (Da 5 Bloods), Tom Hanks (News of the World)

Reaction Notes:

  • Da 5 Bloods was snubbed several times but Delroy Lindo not getting a nomination here is baffling.
  • Assumed we’d see Ahmed, Boseman, and Hopkins.
  • Thought Oldman was almost a lock but wasn’t for sure.
  • Haven’t seen The Mauritanian

Best Actress (Musical/Comedy)

Maria Bakalova (Borat Subsequent Moviefilm)

Kate Hudson (Music*)

Michelle Pfeiffer (French Exit*)

Rosamund Pike (I Care A Lot*)

Anya Taylor-Joy (Emma*)

Notable Snubs: Meryl Streep (The Prom), Rashida Jones (On the Rocks), Cristin Milioti (Palm Springs)

Reaction Notes:

  • Stunned by no Meryl. She could have been nominated for two different films (The Prom and Let Them All Talk) but I was certain she’d get a nom for The Prom.
  • Bakalova will likely be up for supporting at the Oscars but glad to see her here
  • Other than Borat, I haven’t seen any of these films. Yikes.

Best Actor (Musical/Comedy)

Sacha Baron Cohen (Borat Subsequent Moviefilm)

James Corden (The Prom)

Lin-Manuel Miranda (Hamilton)

Dev Patel (The Personal History of David Copperfield*)

Andy Samberg (Palm Springs)

Notable Snubs: Leslie Odom, Jr. (Hamilton), Pete Davidson (The King of Staten Island)

Reaction Notes:

  • This is a classic case of the Globes wanting to get as many famous people involved as possible.
  • I love James Corden and I will support everything he does (except Cats) but he really didn’t need to get nominated here.
  • And I know that Miranda is the focal point of Hamilton but Leslie Odom, Jr. is the strongest lead actor in that show.

Supporting Actress

Glenn Close (Hilbiliy Elegy)

Olivia Colman (The Father*)

Jodie Foster (The Mauritanian*)

Amanda Seyfried (Mank)

Helena Zengel (News of the World)

Notable Snubs: Ellen Burstyn (Pieces of a Woman), Yuh-Jung Youn (Minari*)

Reaction Notes:

  • Helena Zengel was wonderful in News of the World. The best performance by a young actor/actress this year. Love seeing her her but pretty shocked.
  • Seyfriend and Close were my locks.
  • I figured Ellen Burstyn was a lock
  • Still need to see The Father and The Mauritanian

Supporting Actor

Sacha Baron Cohen (The Trial of the Chicago 7)

Daniel Kaluuya (Judas and the Black Messiah*)

Jared Leto (The Little Things)

Bill Murray (On the Rocks)

Leslie Odom, Jr. (One Night in Miami)

Notable Snubs: Paul Raci (The Sound of Metal), Mark Rylance (The Trial of the Chicago 7), Chadwick Boseman (Da 5 Bloods)

Reaction Notes:

  • Nothing against his performance in the film but Jared Leto? Really? Biggest shock of the day for me.

Best Director

Emerald Fennell (Promising Young Woman)

David Fincher (Mank)

Regina King (One Night in Miami)

Aaron Sorkin (The Trial of the Chicago 7)

Chloe Zhao (Nomadland*)

Notable Snubs: Spike Lee (Da 5 Bloods), Paul Greengrass (News of the World)

Reaction Notes:

  • Very happy for Emerald Fennell — Promising Young Woman was sensational
  • Nothing else here was all that shocking

Best Screenplay

Emerald Fennell (Promising Young Woman)

Jack Fincher (Mank)

Aaron Sorkin (The Trial of the Chicago 7)

Christopher Hampton, Florian Zeller (The Father*)

Chloe Zhao (Nomadland*)

Notable Snubs: One Night in Miami, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom

Reaction Notes:

  • Again, love the nom for Promising Young Woman
  • One Night in Miami missing out was a bit of a surprise
  • Thought that maybe this was the year that an animated film (Soul) could get a screenplay nom

Best Picture (Animated)

The Croods 2*

Onward

Over the Moon

Soul

Wolfwalkers

Snubs: The Willoughbys

Reaction Notes:

  • I had Onward, Over the Moon, Soul, and Wolfwakers as locks. The fifth could have gone a few ways.

Best Picture (Foreign Language)

Another Round

La Llorna*

The Life Ahead*

Minari*

Two of Us*

Snubs: None

Reaction Notes:

  • As of now, Another Round is the only one of these I’ve seen. Planning to at least get to Minari soon.

General TV Nomination Reaction Notes:

  • Watch Ted Lasso
  • End of list
